It’s Football Season – M/M Style

Hi everyone,

Big thanks to Jay for hosting me! Joyfully Jay was one of the very first sites I sent my debut novel, The Edge of Control, to back in 2016! How has so much time passed so quickly? I’m thrilled to return with my new novel Backup Plans. (And stay tuned for the sequel, Starting Strong that will come out on November 1st!)

If I had to guess the three biggest questions readers would have for me, I’d suspect they might be these:

What took you so long?!

To which, I can only say … life. I suspect a lot of you know what I mean. Anyone else know what it feels like to have your best laid plans washed away? But I never gave up, which brings me to the next question.

Why football?

I’ll admit, if I was looking at a list of Lou Kelly books, I wouldn’t necessarily follow up romantic suspense, bodyguard/rockstar romance, and a dark shifter novel with a football themed book … but what do they all have in common? Two sexy protagonists fighting the odds to come together.

One of my two main characters, Kieran, is a character who never gives up even though life is stacked against him. To say he’s got issues would be like saying that the Rock has “a few” muscles. Kieran yearns for someone to love him unconditionally, and maybe, in his most secret moments, he’ll admit that he wouldn’t mind relinquishing control and letting someone else call the plays for a change. Enter Travis. He’s a small town sheriff who thrives on being in charge, but he’s also got a soft spot for broken creatures (thus his one-eyed cat and partially deaf, mostly blind, farting basset hound) because he was once broken, too. Backup Plans isn’t just about football. It’s also about resilience and finding the exact love you need, but never thought you’d find.

Do you watch football?

Yep. I watch football the way I read MM books. I’m always looking for interesting characters, cool storylines, intense drama, and yeah, let’s just go ahead and admit that tight ends are absolutely essential.

Lou Kelly loves a good romance. Having honed her skills as an author through a decade of writing and publishing, she discovered m/m fiction and fell in love. What does she like best? The slow burn.
