“Of all the….” George frowned at the familiar stranger stomping up the path through his garden. “What now?”

“Open up.” The man pounded on the back door.

George wandered over with his hand already reaching for his phone to give Murphy a text. He thought he might need backup. And until someone got to know him, Murphy Baird could seem quite intimidating, not to him, especially considering they’d been friends for years and started dating recently. “What do you want?”

“Open up. There are bees out here.”

“Yes, you’re outside in a garden in summer. There are bees everywhere.” George’s gaze darted down to make sure the door was securely locked. “I’m not letting you in my cottage. I don’t know you.”

“Open the sodding door. They might sting me.” He pounded on the glass repeatedly, making Bumble scramble across the room and hide underneath the coffee table. “We have to discuss the bee situation.”

George wanted to close his eyes, put his headphones on and pretend his nightmare of a neighbour didn’t exist. Unfortunately, he wasn’t brilliant at dealing with confrontation. “No. You can whinge at me from out there. Besides, how have you come to complain at me when you’re quite clearly trespassing in my back garden after you climbed the wall?”

While the unnamed neighbour ranted at him through the glass, George heard his front door opening. Margo joined him seconds later with a rolling pin in one hand and her little Chihuahua, Treacle, at her feet. He snorted in amusement when she brandished it.

“Why don’t you bugger off?” She stepped between George and the door. “You don’t waltz through someone’s private garden and demand things. Honestly. We’ll set the dogs on you.”

“We will?” George muttered. “What are you even doing here?”

“Murphy called. And unlike us, your neighbour doesn’t know they’re harmless,” Margo whispered in return. She waved the rolling pin again. “Now, what do you want?”

The man took a deep breath as if to start ranting.

“I’m not your mother. I will not listen to a tantrum from a grown adult. Either speak to us like you have some semblance of self-control or bugger off home.” Margo folded her arms, tapping the baking pin against her bicep. She made an impressively intimidating figure for someone in an apron and covered in flour. “Well? Get on with it. I’ve honey and saffron shortbread cooling on the counter in my cottage.”

Murphy Baird knows without a doubt George wouldn’t harm a fly or a bee or an obnoxious rich businessman. He balances keeping his brewery going with trying to help solve the murder and preparing for the upcoming Highland Games. It’s not made any easier by the impending visit from his father.

As the mystery deepens, they find themselves not knowing quite who to trust.

Can they find the killer before George winds up arrested for murder?
