“How mad is he?” Emory asked the next day when he walked into Ivy’s Auto a few minutes before the producer was set to arrive.
“Pissed, but he seemed resigned to making it happen. Figure he wouldn’t have come here if he was going to say we were out. Guessing he’s going to hand us our asses and then do his part to make the show go on.” I’d cleared space in my office at the shop for the meeting and pointed to the chair I meant for Emory to sit in.
Next to me.
A real couple would sit together, right? Present a united front?
Obviously, the producer was going to know we weren’t a real couple, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to show him we could pull it off.
“I think honesty is our best policy when talking to him,” Emory said as he took the seat behind my desk and next to my chair. “There’s no reason to try to make him think we’re together, but if he thinks we can pull it off, he may be willing to let us through.”
“Once again, little Bell, I like the way you think,” I said, ruffling his hair and chuckling when Emory squawked.
Part of me felt bad for letting Emory step in and take Trevor’s place, but I also couldn’t help being excited about the chance to win. Doing the game with Trevor had been a no-brainer. His little brother maybe wasn’t my best friend, but I was closer to Emory than I was to my own family for the most part—Iris and I weren’t estranged, we just didn’t have a lot in common; we’d both dealt with our father’s infidelity and mom’s subsequent disconnectedness in different ways.
If Emory was willing to play the game, I wasn’t going to stop him.

A.D. Ellis is an Indiana girl, born and raised. She spends much of her time in central Indiana as an instructional coach/teacher in the inner city of Indianapolis, being a mom to two amazing teens, and wondering how she and her husband of over two decades haven’t driven each other insane yet. A lot of her time is also devoted to phone call avoidance and her hatred of cooking.
She loves chocolate, hot tea, sweet wine with friends, pizza, and naps along with reading and writing romance. These loves don’t leave much time for housework, much to the chagrin of her husband. Who would pick cleaning the house over a nap or a good book? She uses any extra time to increase her fluency in sarcasm.
