The cabbie took their bags and the two men got into the carriage. His companion confirmed the address with their driver—the same as on Owen’s letter from the agency—and they headed off through the city’s crowded streets.

“Calvin Springfield.” His new partner held out his hand to shake.

“Owen Sharps.” Owen took the proffered hand and returned the shake with a firm grip. He did his best to push everything from the past twenty-four hours out of his mind.

“You know, I wondered when you didn’t introduce yourself on the train,” Calvin commented without making eye contact. “But since I wasn’t keen to share my name either, I figured it was just as well.”

“I guess it’s not all that strange that we’d end up on the same train to St. Louis. New Pittsburgh is a hub,” Owen said.

Aside from the initial surprise, Calvin didn’t seem to have any difficulty about adjusting to their new working relationship. That signaled another unwelcome likelihood to Owen. He’s not like me. I must have imagined any interest. He wasn’t flirting, just being polite.

I am stuck with a crush on my very not-interested, excruciatingly handsome new partner.

Oh just shoot me now.

“Have you been with the service long?” Calvin found his tongue more easily than Owen seemed to manage.

Don’t think about his tongue. Or his lips—

“Two years. Before that, I was in the Army, County Seat Wars, Cattle Wars,” Owen replied. “You?”

“Three years. They had me at the War Department for a bit, but even in the Army I didn’t always color inside the lines,” Calvin admitted. “Then someone decided it was a better fit to send me on the road. Probably to get me out from underfoot.”

The Supernatural Secret Service recruited people who had at least a touch of paranormal ability. Owen could see ghosts and, if the circumstances were right, could talk to them as well. He wondered what Calvin’s talent was and how they might work together. Platonically. Completely platonically.

Shit. I hope he’s not a mind reader. Owen wondered how much he could concentrate on safe things like shredded wheat or oatmeal to keep him from fantasizing about his sexy partner.

The ride across town was quieter than their time on the train. Owen figured they were both adjusting to the shift from casual strangers to working together in close quarters and dangerous situations.

The service’s headquarters was a large, non-descript building downtown without signage. Not too surprising since the service’s supernatural protections weren’t public knowledge.

The cabbie and doorman carried in their luggage and put it behind the reception desk. Owen and Calvin followed signs to the office number in the assignment letter they both received. That turned out to be a conference room, where two agents in their early thirties rose from their seats to meet them.

Sharps & Springfield, Book 1

Secret agents, forbidden love, danger, and magic!

Supernatural Secret Service agents Owen Sharps and Calvin Springfield meet on the train to their new assignment in St. Louis, and sparks fly between them. But it’s 1897, and they need to be very careful—falling in love can be dangerous for men like them.

It’s their first case together, investigating mysterious disappearances—including the two agents who preceded them. Grim evidence leads them to look for a darker purpose. Old ghosts haunt the railroad line, zombie rise, signs point to ritual sacrifice, and they suspect someone is trying to open the gates of hell.

Can Calvin and Owen stop the mayhem, thwart the vampires, and find true love, or will everything go up in smoke?

Peacemaker is a high-stakes steampunk MM romance thrill ride filled with found family, paranormal Pinkertons, intrepid reporters, mysterious disappearances, nefarious land brokers, hellhounds, zombies, vengeful spirits, dark spells, absinthe magic, a ruthless vampire railroad baron and a love that won’t be denied.

Before Colt and Winchester, there was Sharps & Springfield!
