“So there’s a killer ghost on the loose?” Vic swore under his breath. “How do we catch it?”

“We’ll figure something out,” Simon replied. “We need to take the letters and leave. This house is getting to me. But first—I’ve got a question.” He blew out the candles, gathered the ritual materials, and nodded to let Vic and Ross know they could break their salt circles.

Simon walked to stand in front of the locked door. “Why did Sheldon trap you?”

The ghost threw itself against the invisible barrier that kept it in the room. “He was an arrogant bastard.”

“What did you do to make him lock you up?”

 “Figure it out for yourself.”

Simon staggered and felt a nosebleed start.

“That’s it. Pack up. You’re bleeding. We’re going—now,” Vic ordered. His stern expression made it clear he had made up his mind. Simon nodded, drained from encountering the ghosts.

“Here.” Vic handed Simon a tissue and gave him an assessing once-over. “You okay?”

“Yeah, just took a lot out of me.”

“Okay, we’re going to get you to the car. I’ve got snack bars and energy drinks,” Vic said, taking charge. “You can wait there while Ross and I go back in for the letters.”

 “The ghosts—”

“Putting in an appearance wears them out too—right? So they should be weak until they charge up. And we’ll take the salt and iron with us, so we’ll be protected,” Vic assured him as he walked Simon to the car.

Simon didn’t like having Vic and Ross go back into the house without him, but he wasn’t sure he could be much help right now. Simon got into the car while Vic dug out a sports drink and food. Simon didn’t feel like eating, but he knew the aftereffects would be worse if he didn’t.

“Don’t go near the room with the trapped spirit. We already know that one of Sheldon’s binding spells failed—let’s not make it two,” Simon cautioned.

“We’ll be right back.” Vic turned back to the house, and Simon sagged in the passenger seat, tilting his head up and pinching the bridge of his nose to stanch the blood. He nibbled the snack and washed it down, hoping eating would make him feel better.

Sheldon clearly knew that some of the objects he collected were either haunted or cursed. Did he gather the pieces to exploit them? This whole thing reeks of dark magic. But who is ‘B,’ and why did Sheldon hold his ghost prisoner?

Worse—what do we do about it? I’m not sure I can banish the trapped ghost by myself, and we can’t let him get loose.
