Today I am so pleased to welcome Kate Sherwood to Joyfully Jay. Kate has come to talk to us about her latest release, Darkness. She has also brought along. a great giveaway. Please join me in giving her a big welcome!
Myers-Briggs Test for Characters
I know, I know. It’s not real science; it can’t be relied upon. But when I did my own MBTI test and read the results, I might as well have crossed out every time the description said “INTJs” and written my own name instead. It was that accurate.
Now, I got strong scores in all four of my categories—I’m a strong I, strong N, strong T, strong J—so the results are probably more accurate for me than for others. Still… I think it’s an interesting test for everyone.
And everyone includes my characters! Taking the MBTI test as my characters can give me insight into their personalities, and it’s also fun. Often I’ll do it as I’m writing, once I have a good idea of the characters but could still use a bit more insight. For the Common Law guys, I knew them well enough that I didn’t bother taking the test as I went, but I went through it after the series was written, just for fun.
I wasn’t too thrilled with ESFP for Jericho. I read the description and thought, hmmm, maybe, yeah, sometimes… but he was a weak E and a weak S and only a moderate F and J, so obviously the results wouldn’t be as clear for him. And when I got to the line about how some ESFJs can be identified “by the twenty minute conversation required to ask or answer a simple factual question,” (http://www.humanmetrics.com/personality/esfp) I thought of Jericho getting interviewed the feds and laughed. So, yeah, okay, he’s an ESFP.
Wade came up as an ENTJ. Again, though, not strong in any of the four categories, so not a perfect description. Still, I absolutely agree that Wade “requires little encouragement to make a plan”! (http://www.humanmetrics.com/personality/entj) And some of the other descriptions work for him, too.
It’s not science, but it’s fun. Have you ever taken one of these tests for yourself? How did you feel about the results?
Blurb
A murdered prostitute. An obvious suspect. Clear evidence. For once, Jericho Crewe has a straightforward crime to investigate, and Wade Granger isn’t involved.
It all seems so simple, but Jericho’s instincts won’t let him rest. As he investigates, he finds troubling suggestions that the murder is a part of something larger and more sinister. But working within the boundaries of the law may keep him from finding the truth. If Jericho doesn’t break the rules, an innocent man may rot in jail while a killer remains free to strike again.
Inevitably, it all comes back to Wade. Because who else knows as much about breaking rules? And who else knows Jericho the way Wade does—not wisely, but far, far too well?
Bio
Kate Sherwood started writing about the same time she got back on a horse after almost twenty years away from riding. She’d like to think she was too young for it to be a midlife crisis, but apparently she was ready for some changes!
Kate grew up near Toronto, Ontario (Canada) and went to school in Montreal, then Vancouver. But for the last decade or so she’s been a country girl. Sure, she misses some of the conveniences of the city, but living close to nature makes up for those lacks. She’s living in Ontario’s “cottage country”–other people save up their time and come to spend their vacations in her neighborhood, but she gets to live there all year round!
Since her first book was published in 2010, she’s kept herself busy with novels, novellas, and short stories in almost all the sub-genres of m/m romance. Contemporary, suspense, scifi or fantasy–the settings are just the backdrop for her characters to answer the important questions. How much can they share, and what do they need to keep? Can they bring themselves to trust someone, after being disappointed so many times? Are they brave enough to take a chance on love?
Kate’s books balance drama with humor, angst with optimism. They feature strong, damaged men who fight themselves harder than they fight anyone else. And, wherever possible, there are animals: horses, dogs, cats ferrets, squirrels… sometimes it’s easier to bond with a non-human, and most of Kate’s men need all the help they can get.
After five years of writing, Kate is still learning, still stretching herself, and still enjoying what she does. She’s looking forward to sharing a lot more stories in the future.

Thank you for the post. I think I’ve taken a couple of these tests. I do like reading them but I’m not sure about how I feel about them. I took the test and got ISTJ.

Thanks for the post, Kate – interesting as always. I love to try a couple of test to satisfy my curiousity (no need to put up the result though, right?). 🙂
Congrats on your latest book release.
I’ve not done these type of tests but when I worked we used to have the circle of personalities needed to run the business – leader, innovator, etc. I was always the one to organise getting the job done..
I’ve got the series on preorder but havent got round to reading yet.
Looks like I’m an INFJ…not sure if it’s accurate or not, since I was kind of in the middle on a lot of answers.

Thanks for the post. I haven’t taken any of these tests however I did have to do a psych profile one time for a job.

Thanks for the wonderful post. I would love to read them all. I never took any of these test.
Thanks for an interesting post! violet817(at)aol(dot)com
That’s a very interesting way to ‘get’ the characters, take tests as them.. and get a greater understanding of their personality – as well as finding some points that could be explored more. It’s important for writers to really know their characters, as the better you do, the more you can test them 🙂
I must recognise I have not taken any of these tests myself. It is difficult to answer the questions, because I do not have a clear answer for them. Most of them would be something like It depends, which I guess says a lot about my personality…. LOL!
Congratulations on the release, Kate. I love your books

Hating myself now for missing this yesterday. Anyway, I’m afraid that I haven’t yet taken the said Myers-Briggs test. I’ve taken a lot of personality tests before tho, just for fun. Never took them seriously. Well, I agree with the results Jericho got tho I admit that I don’t have the same opinion with Wade’s. (it’s only a bit, tho) 😉
Better late than never. Congrats on your new release, Kate!
And yeah!. I’d forgotten to type my e-mail. Ugh!

Thanks for the post, Kate. I never heard of the Myers-Briggs test for characters. Very interesting reading.
ISTJ…hmmm, this is the first time I’ve taken this kind of test. I’m going to have to get my sisters to take it. 🙂

I’ve taken the MB test a couple of different times and have always come up INTJ. My dad is the same, and as much as I’d like to claim otherwise, it really isn’t that surprising. Hehe. They can be very insightful at times, no?

Whee! Fun with personality tests!
Thanks for playing along, guys!
I’ve never taken one of those tests before! kimcurington(at)yahoo(dot)com
Congrats and what a great post. I actually train on the MBTI in some of my team building workshops. And I have thought of it when I’ve read characters as well.
