Mel POV
I played over the whole conversation, if you could call it that, with Elias. He behaved completely differently than he had before. The few times I’d seen him at the salon, he’d been nice, and as I thought harder about it, he had seemed very straightforward. He never lingered or made small talk.
I pulled up to Basil’s and texted him to get his ass down. I shut off the engine and went around to the back. Basil sped down the stairs and greeted me with a clap on the back.
“This is the last one, then we have lunch, right?” Basil started pulling one end of the first case out.
“Yeah, thankfully. There isn’t that much left.” I let Basil go backward up the stairs this time.
“Let’s just put these against the kitchen wall and then go. I’m starving.”
We maneuvered the case through the door and placed it not far into the house. “I didn’t realize that all the furniture there wasn’t his. That’s got to make this a lot easier.”
“You know I’d only ever been to his place once before we got together. All the time we spent was always here. I don’t think he really settled into that apartment. It made me wonder why he didn’t pursue me sooner.”
I laughed. “Basil, honey. You know I love you, but sometimes you are just blind. That boy’s been flirting with you for years.”
Basil blushed with a laugh. “Yeah, I guess you’re right.”
“Of course, I’m right.”
We quickly unloaded the second bookcase and locked up the townhouse. Basil didn’t wait long before he grilled me about Elias.
Basil buckled himself in. “Did you apologize to Blu yet?”
I sighed. “Yes. And we have a coffee appointment next week.” I shook my head in amusement.
Basil laughed. “An appointment?”
“Yeah, it was rather odd. I said maybe we should have coffee sometime and he whips out his phone and makes an appointment. I don’t think I can call it a date, especially since it looks like Abel will be joining us.” I thought back on the exchange. “The whole thing was weird.”
Basil turned his head toward me in the corner of my eye. “How so?”
“Just the way he was behaving. We’d never had a conversation longer than two sentences at the salon, and every other time we’ve crossed paths, he’s always been hyper and happy. He was subdued today.” I glanced briefly at Basil. “Maybe he’s still upset about what happened.”
“No. I’ve seen him a few times now outside of the club, and he behaves differently. When he’s in play mode, he’s very bouncy and happy, carefree, but outside of that, he’s very quiet, and you said it perfectly, subdued.”
