What gave you the idea for Night Watch and The Burlington Inn series?

street sign imageA street sign. I know that sounds a little crazy, but it’s true.

I worked in hospitality for many years, and I have incredible memories. A well-run hotel is often like a world of its own, and I was hoping to find a way to capture the quirky craziness. It’s like the theater, so much goes wrong behind the scenes, but audience/guests may never know. They only see well-oiled machine.

But even though I had written a few chapters, it never came together as a whole novel and just lingered in a virtual filing cabinet…until I saw the street sign.

I took a wrong turn off the highway and promptly got lost on back roads. Found a small New England town that I didn’t know was a real town…I knew Burlington only as in “Burlington Mall” – a shopping center off the highway. But then, there it was…Old Peach Orchard Road.

The dusty drawer in my brain popped opened, and characters began talking.

The Burlington Inn was born. A typical old New England building with a lavish history of wealthy landowners and dashing pirates. A nerdy night auditor, who knows all about the hotel and its past; he only works nights, because he is hiding from everything that’s wrong with his life. A gorgeous, edgy, restless cop checks in after midnight, avoiding his own demons.

By the time I got back home I had a whole outline. Two men fall for each other in the dark of the night, but need to find the courage to bring their love into broad daylight. Of course, it still took a while to turn an idea into a real book, but once it was stuck in my head, I couldn’t let it go.

What was your favorite part writing this new novel?

I like conflict and challenges for my main characters and usually like to torture them at least a little before I let them find their happily-ever-after. In Night Watch, Hunter and Cole are flawed in many ways. Hunter just got hurt, but sadly he blames himself. Cole has made mistakes. There are secrets and lies between them. When I write, I often suffer and struggle along with my heroes, and it isn’t always fun.

So, truthfully, my secondary characters are my favorite part of writing.

Mr. Slater is probably the character I love the most in Night Watch. He is the owner of the Burlington Inn. A full-on perfectionist with one thousand and one rules for his employees. Most of the time, he’s grumpy and not easy to work for. He is a confirmed bachelor, who never once misses a chess night with his childhood friend, Mr. Martin. Cole picks up on their relationship fairly quickly “Chess buddies? Is that what the boys called it back in the day?”

And then there’s Skyler, who is Hunter’s best friend. While Hunter always holds back a little, Skyler jumps into life with both feet…and with little regard for the landing. He’s fiercely loyal to the ones he loves. Skyler is outspoken and fun, hiding a lot of pain and loneliness under his fabulous personality.

He will be the main character of the next Burlington Inn story.

Blurb

night watch coverA romance at midnight, but happily ever after at dawn? Complicated…

Hunter Jones is stalling. One day, he’ll be a lawyer in his family’s prestigious firm, but just not yet. Instead he is working the nightshift at the Burlington Inn. It’s the perfect place to hide from everything that’s wrong with his life. Once—just once—he did something reckless and it has haunted him ever since. Romance is the last thing he needs. But then a tall, dark, and sexy stranger checks into the hotel…

Detective Cole Sawyer’s life is a complete clusterfuck of his own making. His lies have ruined his chances at a fresh start, and his anger and insomnia constantly get the better of him. Cole has no business getting involved with the honey-sweet night auditor. But with every late night encounter staying away gets more and more difficult.

When a dangerous stalker targets Hunter, Cole realizes just how far he’s willing to go to protect the man he never should’ve been with in the first place—and Hunter starts to wonder what it’ll take to rescue Cole from himself.

Night Watch, the first book in The Burlington Inn series, is a contemporary hurt/comfort romance.
